Small pizzerias face pepperoni shortage amid pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has caused supply chain shortages from coins to toilet paper and now, pepperoni.

Coronavirus-related disruptions to the meat processing industry has sent prices soaring for the popular pizza topping.

Bloomberg reports smaller, independent pizzerias across the country are paying higher prices for pepperoni. The magazine reports a pizzaeria in South Dekota has seen a steady increase in pepperoni, from $2.87 a pound to now $4.12 a pound for the sliced meat topping. In New York City, pizza shops are paying $6 a pound up from $4 earlier this year.

The increased prices have forced some pizzeria owners to switch pepperoni brands. Bloomberg reports larger pizza chains like Dominos and Pizza Hut are not affected by the price-hike because their prices are set in long-term contracts with their suppliers.
