Some of the students banned from graduation after a senior prank at Sophie B. Wright Charter School will be allowed to participate in commencement after all.

The school has not said how many have had a portion of their punishment lifted or why.

New Orleans City Councilmembers Jason Williams and Helena Moreno, however, have issued a statement commending school officials for the reversal.

"We appreciate Sophie B. Wright's follow up on the discipline issue related to the students involved in the senior prank," both said in the joint news release.  "We feel that the school has handled this issue in a manner that balances fairness for the students involved with the need for a safe and orderly environment that promotes the learning and well-being of all of the students in the school."

Williams and Moreno go on to say that the students who followed the rules and directive are commended for their behavior.

Not everyone is happy, however, The Advocate reported Monday that a senior at Sophie B. Wright has sued the school.

Lyric Naje Fernandez filed the suit over her punishment.

The 18-year-old student says in the suit that school officials violated her due process rights.

She insists state law entitles her to contest the allegations in a hearing.

The student says she should be allowed to take part in the May 13th graduation and wants a preliminary injunction to avoid irreparable harm.

School officials say students were specifically warned not to carry out the prank that involved water balloons, squirt guns, amonia, ketchup, mustard and other substances.

The alleged offenders were suspended from school and barred from prom or graduation.
