Street signs along several blocks of N. Jeff. Davis Pkwy. now bear the name of leftist activist Angela Davis.
Davis is a political activist who has advocated for prisoners' rights. In 1970, she was arrested and charged as a co-conspirator of the so-called "Soledad Brothers," three inmates of Soledad Prison who staged a deadly escape attempt during a court appearance. Davis was acquitted of all charges. In 1980, she ran for U.S. Vice President on the Communist Party ticket.
Blue stickers bearing the name "Angela" were plastered over the abbreviated "Jefferson" on the signs.
In 2017, the city of New Orleans removed the statue of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, from the intersection of Jefferson Davis Parkway and Canal Street. The statue was one of four monuments removed that year, including the Robert E. Lee statue at Lee Circle; the P.G.T. Beauregard Statue at Esplanade Ave., N. Carrollton Ave., and Wisner Blvd; and the Battle of Liberty Place monument at Iberville St. and Badine St. E.
The city has not responded to WWL First News' request for comment.
