The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says one of its deputies was shot, but not injured, Thursday night in River Ridge.
A bullet hit the deputy's gun belt but was not responsible for any injury. The deputy was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting.
According to a JPSO spokesman, the suspect had barricaded himself in his home in the 8700 block of Melrose Lane. Around 6 p.m., the Jefferson Parish Mobile Crisis Team was called to the home.
That team requested assistance from the sheriff’s office.
Around 7 p.m. the suspect, who has not been identified, shot at the deputy.
A SWAT team also responded to the scene and nearby residents were told to remain indoors when several gunshots were heard.
There was an exchange of gunfire between other officers and the suspect. Officers reportedly used bean bag rounds, as well as regular ammunition in the exchange. The sheriff’s office says the suspect was shot at least once and bitten by a K9.
After a two-hour standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. His condition has not been released.
What led to the shooting is unclear.
