Uber is protecting their drivers through the coronavirus pandemic by giving its drivers cleaning supplies and requiring passengers to wear masks.
The ride sharing company says it distributed $50 million worth of sanitizing cleaning supplies and Personal Protective Equipment to its drivers. The supplies were mailed directly to active Uber drivers. Drivers can also pick up cleaning supplies and PPE supplies at Ubers distribution location at 2520 Bayou Road, in New Orleans.
“So far, we have distributed over 57,000 masks, wipes and bottles of hand sanitizer to more than 5,000 drivers and couriers in New Orleans alone, completely free of charge,” said Uber spokesperson, Trevor Theunissen. “We are committed to doing what we can to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers during this time.”
Uber also implemented a “no mask, no ride” policy where both drivers and riders are required to wear a mask while inside the car. When a rider hails a driver through the app they will be asked to take a “selfie” photograph of them wearing a mask or face covering. Drivers will be required to do the same before picking up a passenger.
Riders and drivers have the option to cancel a trip without penalty if either party is not wearing a mask.
Uber also says it has distributes financial assistance to drivers who tested positive for COVID-19.
“So far, we have provided over $20 million in financial assistance to drivers who have been asked to quarantine,” said Theunissen. “It is everyone’s responsibility to help slow the spread and we are doing everything we can to do our part.”
