When it comes to someone with mental issues, can family or friends predict a tragedy?

A man who police say randomly shot 4 victims in Metairie and New Orleans, apparently had dealt with some mental issues in the 6 months.  But is there anything people around him could have seen to prevent this tragedy?

22-year old Sean Barrette's had been having some mental issues according to Sheriff Joe Lopinto.  Twice in the last 6 months and even shot himself in the hand in one of those instances.

Mark Saucier, Licensed Professional Counselor in the New Orleans area, said first off families with someone who has mental issues, that they suspect could be homicidal or suicidal, should have firearms removed from the home.

"There's really not any way to completely predict but if you know the person and you understand that they are making statement that they are not usually making, it's a good idea to contact a mental health professional," Saucier said.

But Saucier adds that 99 percent of people who have mental issues are NOT homicidal.

"They will usually make angry statements or its possible that they have an internet presence that will connect them with other angry people," Saucier said.

It's important for family and friends to look for those unusual signs.
