Several Jefferson Parish businesses are coming up with innovative ways to serve customers

Jefferson Parish is hoping to begin the process of reopening non-essential businesses.

Council member Jennifer Van Vrancken said the Parish has met the criteria to move into the next phase of reopening.

"Over a 14-day period, your supposed to have a decrease of COVID-like illness, a decrease in the number of positive cases and a decrease in hospitalizations. We're there already."

Van Vrancken added that businesses reopening will have to make sure they're taking steps to ensure customer and employee safety, including not allowing more than 10 people, requiring masks and requiring social distance.

Several Jefferson Parish businesses are already coming up with innovative ways to meet those requirements.

Tuxedos To Geaux in Metairie is requiring customers to make appointments through their website which prevents too many people from being in the store at once.

Owner Mel Grodsky said the formal wear store is set to open from Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and that online appointment feature seems to be working.

"It's been so successful so far that we already have 20 appointments for next week," Grodsky said. "10 of those are to book for brand new weddings."

Van Vrancken said other businesses are using apps to schedule shopping appointments as well.

Other businesses like Haydel's Bakery have moved to curbside pick up  and are making preparations to host customers inside when it's allowed.

"I think once people are able to move around a little bit and have gatherings, they are going to need birthday cakes and things like that, so at that point we'll probably open our front shop.

"Of course with all the social distancing measures in place we've ordered some floor markings and stuff like that to keep all of our customers safe while they are in the bakery."

Haydel's Bakery is offering a contactless drive thru pickup the next two Saturdays.
