No. 2 LSU picked up a huge win against No. 9 Auburn Saturday in Tiger Stadium as the Tigers scored a 23-20 win.
Auburn led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 30-yard field goal from Anders Carlson.
LSU was about to take a 7-3 lead in the second after Joe Burrow connected with receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. for a 20-yard touchdown. Marshall had missed the Tigers last three games as he recovered from a foot injury.
That score was set up by big completions to receiver Ja’Marr Chase who tallied game-highs of eight catches for 123 yards.
Auburn, however, regained the lead later in the second quarter when Bo Nix capped a seven-play, 22-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
LSU was able to tie the game, 10-10, just before halftime as Cade York hit a 20-yard field goal. Auburn threatened to score again when freshman running back DJ Williams broke loose for a 41-yard gain. LSU freshman cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. however intercepted Nix’s attempt allowing LSU to run out clock at the end of the first half.
Auburn would regain the lead early in the third quarter after another Carlson field goal. The score was set up by a 70-yard run from Williams. Williams was one of the Tigers’ top weapons during the game as he tallied 151 of Auburn’s total 257 yards.
LSU then went up 16-13, on a 6-yard touchdown run from Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Edwards-Helaire gained every yard on that four-play, 45-yard drive. The junior running back finished the game with 187 total yards.
LSU stretched it’s lead to 23-13 in the fourth quarter when Joe Burrow found the end zone on a 7-yard run to cap an 11-play, 67-yard drive.
Auburn eventually cut into the lead, 23-20, when Nix capped a 49-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Seth Williams with 2:32 to play. However, Auburn had used all their timeouts and the Tigers were able to eat up the game's remaining time.
