Report: Drew Brees to have thumb surgery, Saints QB to miss 6 weeks

The NFL Network’s Rapoport made Who Dats Monday morning even worse.  He tweeted that Saints quarterback Drew Brees will need to have surgery on his injured thumb and that it will keep him sidelined for at least 6 weeks.

#Saints QB Drew Brees has a torn ligament in his throwing thumb and he’s going to require surgery, sources say. The timeframe depends on the surgery, but he’s likely out 6 weeks. That’s the initial estimate.

Looking at the Black & Gold’s schedule, Brees’ earliest possible return would be week 10 in the Mercedes Benz Superdome against the Atlanta Falcons.

Week 3: at Seahawks

Week 4: vs. Cowboys

Week 5: vs. Bucs

Week 6: at Jaguars

Week 7: at Bears

Week 8: vs. Cardinals

Week 9: Bye

Week 10: vs. Falcons

Teddy time comes much earlier than expected in New Orleans.  Bridgewater was re-signed to a one-year $7 million contract this offseason after the Saints traded for him right before the preseason ended last season.  He is believed to be the possible replacement for Brees, once the 40-year old decides to retire.  Bridgewater was thrust into action in the first quarter of yesterday’s 27-9 loss at the LA Rams and went 17-of-30 passing for 165 yards. Not impressive but, he also didn’t get much help for teammates as a number of balls were dropped and untimely penalties killed any positive momentum.

The 1-1 Saints now get a whole week to game plan with Bridgewater as their signal caller.  The team is in Seattle currently getting ready to face the 2-0 Seahawks Sunday.  New Orleans has not won a game in the Emerald City since 2007.
