The New Orleans Police Department has a new leader. Chief Michael Harrison is leaving to take the top job in Baltimore, and Mayor LaToya Cantrell has selected Shaun Ferguson to be the new NOPD chief. Ferguson, a New Orleans native, has been on the force for 21 years; and Cantrell described him as “fair, firm and friendly.”
To learn more about Chief Ferguson, I spoke with former NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas. Serpas promoted him to lieutenant and said Ferguson had done a “tremendous job” throughout his career. Serpas also said Ferguson’s “leadership when he worked in my organization in investigations, leadership, and then field command made him an incredibly strong candidate.”
