Cam Jordan and Saints defense are primed and ready for Kyle Murray & the Cardinals

By: Tim Zimmer

Saints defensive end Cam Jordan talked to Bobby Hebert and Kristian Garic about the Saints defense and its development as a dominating force in the NFL this season. Plus, the All-Pro defensive captain is laser focused on Heisman trophy winner and Cardinals QB Kyler Murray.

Jordan picked up another two sacks this past weekend against the Chicago Bears to give him seven total so far this season. He was asked if this is his best performance to date. “I’ve told people I’m entering my prime,” said Jordan. “In that mindset and mentality, I feel the best I’ve ever felt. I feel like I want to play the best I’ve ever played.”

Don’t expect Jordan to slow down anytime soon; he already put it out there that he wants to play well into his late 30’s like other great NFL defensive ends. “I look at guys who are similar...that have projected well into their 30s. You look at Mike Strahan, Cameron Wake, Calais Campbell...as a defensive end, this is something you aspire to be and not only hit your stride, but hit your prime into your 30s,” Jordan continued. “I’m excited and I’m looking to play until I’m 35, 36 or 37, but we’ll see. It’s a blessing for every opportunity.”

It’s not just Cam Jordan that’s been spectacular on the Saints defensive line. He credits two newcomers, who have stepped up and contributed in a big way on the defensive front.

“You talk about the jump from game one to where we are now. We started Shy Tuttle and Malcolm Brown. These are guys that were just fresh to the defense. These are guys who are trying to acclimate to the New Orleans defense standards. You talk about halfway through the season how Malcom Brown is playing the run, and how Shy Tuttle has grown in his rookie year...that’s going to make a difference.”

Jordan continued to praise his teammates, “Not saying that we weren’t ready, when you have veterans such as Sheldon (Rankins) and David (Onyemata), who have been part of the team going on four years. They know exactly how to respond and what we need from them in our defense.”

That defense will take on another QB, Kyler Murray, who can use both his arm and legs as weapons to move the ball. Are the Saints up to the challenge? Cam Jordan can’t wait.

“The way Kyler Murray is extending plays the last couple games...that’s impressive. Some would say Russell Wilson-esque,” observes Jordan. “It comes down to keeping them in the pocket. We’ve already faced QBs Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson and Dak Prescott. I’ve been waiting for my Sam Darnold, but I guess we’re not getting that.”

The Arizona Cardinals come into Sunday’s week 8 meeting with a 3-3-1 record. With a win, the Saints could enter their bye week with a 7-1 record. Kickoff in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is set for noon. Game day coverage starts at 8am on the flagship station of the Saints, WWL.
