Hebert: It was a 'no-brainer' for Saints to bring back Cam Jordan for Year 16

The New Orleans Saints and Cam Jordan agreed to stay together for one more season, Year 16 in the NFL for the former first-round pick.

And that should be no surprise, considering a few important factors, the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert said Tuesday on SportsTalk.

"To me he just couldn’t retire, that’d be blasphemy, because it’s not like he struggled last season," Hebert said. "He had 10.5 sacks. You know, what have you done for me lately, I say that all the time, how could you not utilize Cam Jordan’s talent."

It's about more than the play on the field, even if at the end of the day that's what gets the headlines. Jordan has been a mainstay for the Saints since they selected him No. 24 overall in the 2011 draft. He's the franchise leader in sacks and ranks 17th on the all-time list. When he retires, there's likely little debate that he's earned a spot in the NFL's Hall of Fame.

But what makes Jordan unique among Saints greats is what this year's deal likely means: He's a Saint for life.

That can't be said for other Hall of Famers who donned black and gold. Drew Brees wasn't drafted by the Saints. Rickey Jackson, Willie Roaf, Sam Mills, Morten Anderson -- all finished their careers elsewhere. More recent examples would be Jahri Evans and Terron Armstead. It's rare to finish with the team you started with, and that's what makes Jordan's ride special.

“Cam Jordan is a lifer for the Saints," Hebert continued. "So for me it was a no-brainer to bring him back.”

The Saints announced they'd reached a deal with Jordan after finishing the first of two days of minicamp practices.
