Princess Diana’s signature hairstyle was created on a whim.

The late mother of Prince William and Prince Harry is known for her classic bob hairdo and it all came about after an impromptu conversation with her hairdresser, reported People.

Sam McKnight, who was Diana’s personal hairstylist in the ‘90s, discussed how the pair came up with the fashionable ‘do in a new interview for British Vogue.

"The first time I met the Princess of Wales was on a shoot," he said in a video clip. "This leggy blonde comes bouncing up the stairs, smiled and made us all melt, and it was Princess Diana."

For one of the portraits, McKnight made Diana’s hair look short by tucking it under her tiara. At the end of the shoot, the royal asked how he would cut her hair if given the opportunity.

"I said, 'I would cut it all off and just start again,'" McKnight said. "It was the beginning of the '90s and it was at the time that I was doing lots of shows and covers and a lot of the girls had short hair, and we were moving from the big frou-frou '80s into the sharp, more androgynous, business chic of the '90s."

Diana was completely game with the drastic change.

"So she said ‘why don't you just cut it off now?' So I cut it off then and we never looked back," McKnight recounted.

With the success of Netflix’s “The Crown” and Kristen Stewart’s upcoming portrayal of the late royal in “Spencer,” there’s been renewed interest in Diana’s hairstyle.

Many fashion outlets are predicting the modern “Diana bob” will become one of the most popular looks of the year.
