LSU will be without one of its top players Saturday after cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was hospitalized Friday night.
ESPN’s College Gameday reported that the preseason All-SEC selection will be out for the Tigers’ season opener against the Mississippi State Bulldogs which is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. The school released a statement confirming Stingley’s illness.
“Derek Stingley Jr. became acutely ill last night and was evaluated overnight in the hospital,” the school announced in a statement. “His condition is not COVID-19 related and he is expected to be discharged soon. He will return to activity after full evaluation by the medical team.”
The consensus All-American was one of LSU’s top returning starters after a stellar freshman season where he logged six interceptions.
If Stingley is unable to play the Tigers will rely on their young cornerbacks, sophomore Cordale Flott and freshman Elias Ricks.
