Just a few short months after helping to lead LSU to its first national championship in baseball in 14 years, now-former Tigers pitching ace Paul Skenes made his pro debut Wednesday.

Skenes was selected first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he’s currently playing in the Pirates’ farm system for the Florida Coast Pirates.

Skenes pitched one inning in his first professional appearance, striking out one and going three-up, three-down in the inning.

It was the first live game action of any kind for Skenes since June 22, when he last pitched for LSU against Wake Forest in Omaha.

Besides the Tigers’ national title, Skenes enters the majors with a slew of awards under his belt, including the College World Series MVP and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Many analysts believe he could make his way all the way up to the official Pittsburgh roster before season’s end.
