After waiting three years for his opportunity to be the starting quarterback at LSU, Garrett Nussmeier is not ready to give it up.

Nussmeier announced on Wednesday afternoon that he will return for fifth and final season at LSU.

“God brought me to LSU for a reason, I had to observe and trust in his timing and his plan for me time and time again, I stayed at LSU because of that reason and again I feel like my time at LSU is not over,” Nussmeier said.

It’s not a surprise that Nussmeier is staying. His Dad is a longtime coach in the NFL and there’s been reports he felt his son needed another year in college.

It’s been a very good season as a first-year starter. Nussmeier has thrown for 3,739 yards, completed 64% of his passes, and thrown for 26 touchdowns.

He put up big numbers because LSU lacked a running game in several of its games. His 491pass attempts is the second-most in school history and the third-most in the nation.

Nussmeier will need to cut down on the turnovers, he had 11 interceptions this season and a fumble against Oklahoma led to a touchdown.

The last two LSU quarterbacks that returned for a second season as a starter, Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels, both won the Heisman Trophy in their fifth season in college football.

Matt Flynn was also in his fifth season when he led the Tigers to a national championship in 2007.

Nussmeier’s return gives hope LSU could have another good offense next season and they’ll need a veteran signal caller to navigate a difficult schedule in 2025.

The full schedule was released Wednesday. We already knew the Tigers open the season at Clemson.

But they’ll host Florida in the SEC opener on September 13th and the first SEC road trip is September 27th at Ole Miss.

The Tigers will also have two tough road games in November against Alabama and Oklahoma.
