LSU star DT Maason Smith done for year with torn ACL: report

The injury was added to the insult early in the week for LSU football, with star defensive tackle Maason Smith reportedly done for the year.

The LSU sophomore has suffered a torn ACL and is expected to miss the rest of the season, according to reports.

Smith left the game in the first half against Florida State and returned in street clothes and with a knee brace and crutches. The Tigers went on to lose the game 24-23 on a blocked PAT as time expired.

Smith, out of Terrebonne High School, was the No. 1 recruit in the stop and among the top in the nation when he joined LSU in the 2021 class, the final under Ed Orgeron. He was expected to be a major piece along LSU's defensive line and defensive anchor in the first year under new head coach Brian Kelly. Smith played in nine games in his freshman season and recorded 19 tackles in a season that was also shortened by a leg injury.

Jacobian Guillory, Jaquelin Roy, Mekhi Wingo and others will be looking to fill the gap as the Tigers take on Southern in Week 2 and beyond.
