Myles Brennan's football career is over, he said so himself.
After 6 years at LSU, the program announced Monday afternoon that the quarterback had decided to step away from football. Brennan put out a statement about 4 hours later reiterating that decision. Here's what it said:
"Over the last five years, I have given all of my body, heart, and soul to LSU Football. Playing for LSU has been a dream come true. Wearing the purple and gold, running into Death Valley, winning a national championship, and starting at quarterback for the LSU Tigers -- what more could a kid ask for? I will never forget the time I've spent and the memories I have made here.
"To the players who have suited up alongside me; to the coaches who recruited, signed and developed me; to the training staff who has cared for me; to the support staff who has provided everything I needed to compete at the highest level and continue my education; to the fans who cheered for me every step of the way: Thank you.
"I want to say thank you to the student body, the administration, and the entire LSU fan base for all your tremendous support over the last five years. I will never forget my time in Baton Rouge. I love LSU and all our fans.
"I am forever grateful for every opportunity I've been given, every obstacle I've overcome, and every second I've been a Tiger. However, after five seasons, it is time for me to start a new chapter in my life. I am announcing today that I will be stepping away from football. I am thankful for where this journey has taken me so far, and I am looking forward to where it takes me next."
Brennan's career in Baton Rouge ends after five seasons, during which he participated in four separate quarterback battles. He lost the first two to Danny Etling and Joe Burrow, but earned his chance to start beginning in the 2020 season. That run ended after four games due to injury. He had a chance to compete for the job again in 2021, but that competition ended before it began due to an injury suffered shortly before he reported to camp.
Brennan had initially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal during the 2021 season, but pulled his name out and returned to the Tigers after a meeting with new head coach Brian Kelly. This offseason he went into another QB battle against Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels, sophomore Garrett Nussmeier and freshman Walker Howard. A source told WWL's Kristian Garic that the decision was made over the weekend to go with Daniels as the starter, with Brennan's decision coming shortly thereafter.
"What a journey it has been," Brennan said in sharing his statement. "I have given my all to this university and football team. I love every one of you. I will be a Tiger for life. 15 is officially signing out. #ForeverLSU"
