Archbishop Shaw wins first football state championship since 1987

Shaw Wins
Ian Auzenne/WWL

Thirty-eight years after he led the Archbishop Shaw Eagles to the Class 4A state championship, head coach Hank Tierney returned the Marrero parochial school to the top of the Louisiana football mountain.

E. D. White jumped out to a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when junior quarterback Grant Barbera closed out an eight-play, 89-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Shaw tied the game early in the second quarter when quarterback Mason Wilson ran 21 yards for a score. Carter Douglas regained the lead for the Cardinals with four minutes left in the second quarter via a two-yard scamper. Eagles receiver Jacob Washington tied the game with seven seconds left in the first half when he caught a wide open 35-yard touchdown pass from Wilson.

On Shaw’s ensuing drive, Parker helped his team ice the game by rushing 29 yards to the Cardinals’ 30-yard line, giving Shaw a first down and the chance to run out the rest of the clock.
