Jarvis Landry is no stranger to giving back to his hometown with youth football camps, but there was something new this year.
It was the first time ever he was able to bus his roughly 100 camp attendees all the way down to the Saints facility from Lutcher for his 6th annual Jarvis Landry Giveback event. It was an experience he never got to have himself as a youth football player.
“To be able to do it here," Landry said. "back home like this at this point of my career, it means a lot.”
Landry has hosted camps in each of his prior NFL homes of Miami and Cleveland, and the first five of his Louisiana camps had been held at Lutcher High School in St. James Parish. Now that he's a member of the New Orleans Saints, he was able to bring that group inside the team facilities for the first time, much like new teammate Tyrann Mathieu did for his camp earlier this month.
All attendees went through drills led by Landry and area coaches, were treated to a lunch and an T-shirt, and were sent home with custom backpacks filled with school supplies and other of Landry's "favorite" items. A recent Lutcher grad was also presented with the annual Building Winners Foundation scholarship at the event.
“I really want to be, not only just a presence, but obviously being here from a mentoring standpoint, coach football," Landry said. "Louisiana is about football. And obviously being able to extend my resources and give back through my sponsors as well to these kids that frankly may need more than others.”
Landry himself will get a chance to go to camp with the Saints for the first time later this month, with veterans set to report for training camp on July 26.
