QB Ian Book also headed to Eagles; Saints claim Bills OT on waivers

Another former member of the Saints roster is on his way to Philadelphia, this time through waivers.

Second-year quarterback Ian Book was claimed on waivers by the Eagles after he was cut by New Orleans on Tuesday, meaning he'll have a new home. It was likely the Saints would've sought to sign him to the 16-man practice squad if he had cleared waivers.

He'll join former Saints defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson, who was traded to Phiadelphia on Tuesday morning -- along with a 2025 7th round pick -- in exchange for a 2023 5th rounder and 2024 6th rounder.

But Book, a 4th round draft pick from the 2021 season, was the lone player who didn't clear. That means intriguing young players such as WRs Dai'Jean Dixon, Kirk Merritt, Rasheed Shaheed, RB Abram Smith and others are clear to re-sign with the Saints if they so choose.

On the other side the Saints made one claim of their own in the form of former Bills OT Tanner Owen. The 6-5, 292-pound offensive lineman was a standout at Missouri State and was among the Bills' cuts on Tuesday. It's likely he'll be in the mix for the backup LT spot, with Saints rookie Trevor Penning expected to miss time with a significant toe injury. The team kept Penning and UDFA Lewis Kidd on the initial roster, though it's likely Penning reverts to injured reserve with the option to return as early as Week 5 if healthy.

Establishing the team's practice squad will be the next matter of business, with at least one intriguing question in: Who will be in the mix to run scout team quarterback?
