The numbers were thin at Saints practice on Monday, and that might not be changing any time soon.
The Saints were without 21 players due to injuries ranging from minor concerns to potential serious time missed. Among that group missing was CB Rejzohn Wright, who will land on IR and undergo surgery to address a hip issue. The move freed up a roster spot for newly signed kicker Daniel Carlson, who was in attendance and wearing No. 48.
"That's part of the journey you're on in the NFL," head coach Kellen Moore said of the mounting injuries. "Inevitably you're going to have to juggle some medical things, and that's just part of this. You know, our guys have got to be able to adjust."
The Saints held what Moore described as a "hybrid walkthrough" intended to get players back up to speed after a difficult week out west. There were no full-speed team periods.
Brought to you by TRANESOUTH: It's hard to stop a Tranewww.audacy.comWith all that in mind, here is the list of players I didn't see practicing:
- WR Jordyn Tyson (hamstring)
- WR Trey Palmer
- WR Mason Tipton - on PUP
- WR Bub Means (hamstring)
- RB Devin Neal (hamstring)
- CB Rejzohn Wright (hip) - on IR
- CB Quincy Riley (groin)
- RB Ty Chandler (knee)
- DB Lorenzo Styles Jr. (calf)
- CB Dalys Beanum
- RB Alvin Kamara (knee)
- RG Cesar Ruiz (ankle)
- DT Christen Miller (shoulder)
- LB Chris Rumph (ankle)
- DL Brien Taylor (stinger)
- OL Toricelli Simpkins III (concussion)
- OL Barry Wesley
- TE Moliki Matavao (knee)
- TE Oscar Delp (hamstring)
- DE Cam Jordan (hamstring)
- DT John Ridgeway
Quite a list. We did see both Christen Miller and Brien Taylor working off to the side. It sounds like Ty Chandler, Moliki Matavao could miss significant time with their respective injuries. RB Devin Neal's injury is to the same leg in which he had a hamstring injury previously in camp.
One piece of good news was the return of RB Audric Estime, who did not make the trip to California as he rehabbed from an ankle injury suffered during the preseason opener. His return means he'll be able to continue to make his case for the 53-man roster in a RB room that suddenly feels shorthanded, though it will be adding another body soon with Zamir White, who was acquired in a trade that sent LB Deion Jones to the 49ers.
The Saints will be back in action on Tuesday before holding their final open practice of camp at Tulane's Yulman Stadium. That practice is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The Saints will then hit the road for a showdown with the Cowboys in the preseason finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.
