Saints re-sign DE Carl Granderson to 2-year deal ahead of free agency: report

NFL free agency doesn't begin until later this month, but the Saints have already inked one defensive player to a new deal.

That player is defensive end Carl Granderson, who agreed to a new 2-year deal worth just over $4.5 million, per a report from ESPN's Field Yates.

Granderson was set to be an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent), meaning the Saints could have retained him with the minimum qualifying offer of $965,000 and he'd have been unable to negotiate with other teams. His new deal also includes a $240,000 signing bonus.

Granderson started three games for the Saints in 2021, his third NFL season, and logged 3 sacks and 25 tackles. It's the first substantial signing of the offseason for the team, and he'll provide depth along the line with veterans Cam Jordan, Marcus Davenport and Tanoh Kpassagnon. The Saints will also hope to see more of 2021 first-round pick Payton Turner, who was limited to just five games played in his rookie season due to injuries.

But while it's the first signing for the Saints, it will be far from the last in free agency, which officially begins on March 16. The Saints are in the market for a starting quarterback, with Jameis Winston squarely on their radar, and also have decisions to make on several key free agents including S Marcus Williams, LT Terron Armstead and LB Kwon Alexander, among others.
