Saints to sign safety Jonathan Abram, bring back DT Malcolm Roach: reports

The Saints addressed two positions of need in a matter of minutes Tuesday evening.

The first move addressed the defensive interior, with the Saints agreeing to terms to re-sign Baton Rouge native and former UDFA Malcolm Roach, according to a report from Tom Pelissero.

Moments later, it was reported that the Saints had addressed a need in the secondary, agreeing to terms with veteran safety Johnathan Abram, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, yet another former Raiders player in the building.

The move comes after a busy free agency stretch for the Saints, which has included several defensive signings in DTs Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders, along with cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. The Saints also agreed to terms with a backup offensive lineman in Storm Norton, and RB Jamaal Williams over the past week.

Roach, 24, has appeared in 29 games, starting five, over the past three seasons with the Saints. He's accounted for 52 tackles (25 solo), 1 sack and 1 interception.

Abram, a first round selection in 2019, has appeared in 43 games, starting 36. He's accounted for 267 tackles (167 solo), along with 3 interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The 26-year-old will be an interesting addition to a safety room that includes veterans and incumbent starters in Tyrann Mathieu and Marcus Maye, along with special teams ace J.T. Gray. Two depth safeties from the 2022 squad haven't been re-signed, with Justin Evans agreeing to a free agent deal with the Eagles and Daniel Sorenson still a free agent.
