Reigning Masters champion Tiger Woods got off to a nice start in his bid to capture his sixth career green jacket on Thursday.

The 44-year-old veteran's impressive first round included a near-miss on what would have been a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole.

Wielding an iron on the short tee shot, Tiger lofted a high-arcing drive over the drink before it thudded down on the rain-soaked green a few feet past the hole.

The ball then trickled back a couple feet and looked to have a chance at dropping into the cup, but it stopped short by what appeared to be several inches.

Tiger then tapped in the gimme putt for a birdie, marking his third on the day and second in a row.

Woods, grouped with Shane Lowry and Andy Ogletree, started his round on the back nine, on the par-4 10th hole. He parred his first three holes before picking up a birdie on 13, a par-5.

Tiger was near the top of the leaderboard when he finished his round at 4 strokes under par, tied for fourth with several others. He notched four birdies, and didn't record a bogey.

Leader Paul Casey finished at 7 under, two strokes ahead of second-place Webb Simpson and Xander Schauffele, who were tied at 5 under.

Many groups were late getting out owing to rainy morning conditions at Augusta National.

Woods famously recaptured Masters glory in 2019, marking his first major title in 11 years and his first green jacket since 2005. He also won the Masters in 1997 -- his first major -- as well as in 2001 and '02.
