The CDC will extend an order preventing landlords from evicting tenants to March 31, protecting as many as 40 million people from displacement. A study by investment firm Stout estimates up to 14 million households could already be close to eviction, with a rental shortfall of more than $24 billion. The order was set to expire on Jan. 31, but the CDC was directed to extend it during a flurry of executive orders signed yesterday by President Biden.
The American Petroleum Institute says U.S. crude supplies rose by 2.6 million barrels for the week ended Jan. 15. The data also showed gasoline stockpiles up by 1.1 million barrels.
