WASHINGTON (KMOX) - Missouri's Republican congressman who was the leading voice in the push to challenge the results of the 2020 election just had his best month in years in terms of campaign donation totals.
According to a release from Sen. Josh Hawley's campaign, he raised $969,000 last month with an average donation of $52 and added 12,000 new donors. The spike in donations is the highest monthly total for him since before we won his Senate seat in 2018.
“Despite much ink being spilled about corporate political action committee (PAC) support being paused and three donors separating themselves from Senator Hawley, the Hawley campaign has seen a surge in financial support — raising nearly $1 million in January with thousands of new donors," Hawley's campaign announced. "Despite the aggressive attacks by national Democrats, special interest groups, and many in the media, a strong majority of Missouri voters have rallied to Senator Hawley."
Many fellow congressmen and congresswomen are calling on him to resign or be kicked out of office, claiming he helped incite the riot on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol that resulted in the death of five people and forced some lawmakers and their staff to shelter in fear of their lives. And while many big donors such as Hallmark, the CEO of Tamko Building Products and others have decided to pull their money and support, "More Missouri voters approve of the job Hawley is doing in the Senate than do not. His support in Missouri is firm."
Former U.S. Senator John Danforth, who was another strong support or Hawley that recently switched sides, tells CNN he knows stirring up anger is getting results.
"There has been almost no push back from what I would call traditional republicans. And that's unfortunate," Danforth says. "So I think it's very important for the rest of us to speak out."
Danforth says he hopes the Republican Party can get back to what he calls traditional conservative values.
