The New Orleans Police Department says one person died in a suspected drunk-driving crash this morning on I-10.

It happened around 5:40 a.m. in the east-bound lanes near Elysian Fields Ave., headed towards the High Rise.

Police say a man driving a white Volkswagen Jetta pulled over to the right shoulder with car trouble. Investigators say when the driver got out of his car, he was hit by a Ford F-250 pickup traveling in the right lane.

"The driver of the pickup truck remained on scene and police and EMS were called to the location. Interstate 10 was shut down from just before the Elysian Fields exit to the Louisa Street exit," said police. "The Interstate was fully reopened at approximately 7:58 a.m."

Police say officers arrested the driver of the Ford, 45-year-old Lamar Gross, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The incident closed the I-10 with police diverting traffic off the highway at the Elysian Fields off-ramp.
