The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting near Houma.
According to the sheriff, a man was shot Tuesday at a business in the 3700 block of Grand Caillou Road. Medical first responders took the victim to a local hospital, but he died late Tuesday night.
One suspect, 18-year-old Kasen Patrick Verrett, is in custody.
According to investigators, the victim and Verrett were family members.
"Detectives determined that the shooting stemmed from an encounter between Verrett and the victim in the parking lot of the business." the sheriff's office said. "During questioning, Verrett admitted that as the victim began walking away, he retrieved an AR-15-style rifle from beneath the front seat of the vehicle and fired multiple rounds in the victim’s direction, striking him several times."
According to the sheriff's office, there was a juvenile in Verrett's vehicle who witnessed the shooting. The sheriff says detectives determined that the juvenile was not party to the crime, and made several phone calls to family members providing information about what happened.
The sheriff's office says that information was vital to the investigation.
"This investigation came together because our team followed the evidence, utilized every resource available, and refused to make assumptions about anyone’s involvement," said Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet. "Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and loved ones as they face an unimaginable loss, and our Detectives will continue working to ensure every aspect of this case is thoroughly investigated."
