New Orleans fire fighters had their hands full fighting a 3-alarm blaze Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at a home near the intersection of Dumaine and North Rocheblave.

The fire destroyed three homes as WWLTV reports.

An elderly woman was injured due to smoke inhalation and a 6-year-old girl suffered burns to her neck.

The NOFD says firefighters were on the scene within six minutes. However, Aaron Mischler, President of the firefighter’s union who has been critical of the fire department for closing random firehouses due to city furloughs, says a six-minute response time is unacceptable.

"A six-minute response time is under the 8-minute national standard but it could have been shorter," said the statement to media. "A fire doubles in size every 30 to 60 seconds and had the Treme station been open the fire would have been wrapped up quicker and any injuries could have been prevented."

The NOFD says they believe the fire started in a vacant home, which spread to an occupied home next door, and another vacant home next to it.
The home where the fire is believed to have started was destroyed and the other burned homes were on the verge of collapse according to NOFD.
