400 days from today, New Orleans swears in a new mayor. But before that happens, there's the whole political campaign and election process to come.

City council members Helena Moreno and Oliver Thomas remain at the top of discussion, with State Senator Royce Duplessis' name coming up in political circles, says Gambit columnist and political analyst Clancy DuBos. DuBos says there is another name now coming up.

"I've  also heard a lot about former Judge Arthur Hunter, who ran for D.A. five, four years ago," DuBos said.

DuBos says there will be others, and often, it's not the early favorite who wins. New Orleans voters have a history of electing dark-horse candidates.

"Examples of that would be Ray Nagin, LaToya Cantrell -- you know, they weren't early front runners, going all the way back to 'Chep' Morrison, who was an underdog when he announced," said DuBos.

But front runners have made it, too, like Marc Morial and Mitch Landrieu, although DuBos points out both of them were late entrants in the race.

Qualifying for the mayor's race and other municipal races in New Orleans begins July 9, 2025.
