If you’re among the seemingly countless Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans customers who’ve seen sharp increases in your energy bill in recent months, then you may have wondered why you’ve had to pay more while your energy usage has stayed consistent. I’ve asked myself that question in the past three years, but never put much effort to find out what is making my bill go up when my habits really haven’t changed.
We’ve consistently heard that when overall energy use is up, whether during a blast of cold weather during the winter or punishing hot weather as we’ve been experiencing this summer, the cost of energy production will rise as well. Entergy representatives have also said the price of natural gas has spiked and since natural gas is often used in the production of electricity, the cost in producing that energy is more costly. But what I was unaware of is how the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Mississippi impacts power production for Louisiana, and how it impacts our monthly Entergy bills.
I’m not an investigative or environmental reporter so I turned to another reporter who fits both categories. It was one of her posts on Twitter that got me asking questions about that nuclear station.
What I found out may make Entergy customers even more frustrated. Take a listen.
