The holidays are typically a time for families to come together and celebrate, but sometimes those reunions can turn combustible, especially when the alcohol starts flowing. A new study says that’s the case for more than 1 in every 5 such parties in the Pelican State.
According to data released by American Addiction Centers, about 22% of all holiday gatherings in Louisiana end in drunken spats.
That total ranks Louisiana behind a number of states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and South Dakota.
The study shows that 38% of the conflicts involve liquor, a number high enough that 68% of respondents have considered alcohol-free gatherings.
Additionally, 57% of those polled say at least one member of their family has a tendency to be “argumentative and confrontational” once the drinks start flowing, and that politics is the #1 point of contention.
The poll surveyed 3,405 respondents during the month of November.
