LSU football will have a new head coach--and, likely, a whole new coaching staff--next year. The university fired head coach Brian Kelly late Sunday night and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan Monday morning.
So, just how attractive is the LSU gig?
"Highly attractive," NFL and college football analyst Mike Detillier said.
According to Detillier, Louisiana has an unusually large amount of football talent that coaches can recruit. That, he says, should be enough to lure big-name coaches to apply for the now vacant LSU head coaching positions.
"Louisiana produces athletes and football players like very few states," Detillier said to WWL's Tommy Tucker. "(Louisiana) is either one or two (over the) nine of the last 11 years in producing, per capita, pro football players. (This job is) highly attractive."
WWL LSU columnist Jeff Palermo says some coaches may be hesitant to apply for the LSU job.
"There are probably some coaches are looking at this thing and saying, 'They fired Ed Orgeron two years after he won a national championship. They fired Brian Kelly four years into his contract after losing to three teams ranked in the top 10,'" Palermo said. "If I don't win in two or three years, am I gone?"
Despite this, Palermo says the job has a lot of upside for whomever the new head coach is.
"ESPN ranked the best openings, and they had LSU at number one," Palermo said. "You can win a national championship here. You have a lot of great talent here."
