Atlantic disturbance could become subtropical storm

storm

A non-tropical low pressure system northeast of Bermuda has the potential to be 2021's first tropical cyclone.

The low is forecast to develop by tomorrow afternoon and generate gale-force winds.

"The low is then forecast to move west-southwestward over warmer waters on Friday and could become a short-lived subtropical cyclone over the weekend to the northeast of Bermuda," said National Hurricane Center Senior Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake. "The system is expected to move toward the north and northeast into a more hostile environment by Monday."

The hurricane center gives the low a 40 percent chance to develop into a cyclone over the next five days.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1.
