A physician at a Baton Rouge hospital is identified as an alleged suspect in what is being called a ‘racially motivated’ attack on a Southern University student near LSU’s campus.

As The Advocate reports, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesperson Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr. said the female student got into a verbal altercation with the male suspect and the suspect punched the student in the chest then ran away. This all happened at about 6:55 p.m. Monday evening at the LSU lakes in the 2800 block of Dalrymple Drive.

According to the newspaper, after Baton Rouge police released a photo of the possible attacker, the agency received several tips about the suspect and hope to follow up on those leads in the investigation.

The newspaper reports that after the photo of the alleged suspect was released, employees at Our Lady of the Lake hospital system received an internal email from the hospital system’s President and CEO, Scott Wester, regarding Monday’s attack.

"Baton Rouge police have identified one of our employed physicians as the suspect in an alleged racially motivated attack that surfaced online and in the media Tuesday evening," The email said according to The Advocate.

The email did not identify the name of the doctor or the doctor’s title practice. However, the email says the doctor was placed on leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation. BRPD investigation is still ongoing.
