Local shelters are bursting at the seams with unwanted or stray animals and the holidays can be a popular time for people to consider adopting a pet for a friend or loved one.
But, one of the most popular times for agencies to receive pets is after the holidays when people return those gifts! Here are some things you may want to consider before putting a bow on that cute little puppy.
Louisiana Humane Society Executive Director, Jeff Dorson, cautions against it.
"First, make sure a pet is requested. And make sure the person is ready for the financial and time commitments."
Dorson says that a new pet can cost upwards of $1500 after getting the appropriate shots and necessary items to create space for a pet. And, speaking of space, that's important too.
"How big is the yard and is there walking space? What kind of breed should they have?"
Dorson recommends a sort of "test drive" of a pet before making the full commitment.
"You can go to your local shelter and foster pet and test out how they will fit into your lifestyle."
