A water main break near Morrison Road and Benson Street touched off a precautionary boil advisory Tuesday for a large part of New Orleans East.
The New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board says water pressure fell below 20 pounds per square inch in the area.
"Residents in the affected areas are advised to use bottled or boiled tap water to drink, cook, clean food or brush teeth until further notice," the utility said. "Residents with compromised immune systems should also use safe water to wash hands, shower or bathe."
SWBNO will notify residents when the boil advisory ends. Samples will be tested to see if any contamination occurred while the pressure was low.
