About $33 million of the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure plan will go toward cleaning up 277 of an estimated 15,000 abandoned oil and gas wells on federal land. Interior Sec. Deb Haaland notes that millions of Americans live within one mile of an abandoned oil or gas well, and that the wells pose a danger to people “particularly in communities of color and rural communities.”
Environmental groups have delivered petitions to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in opposition to the transportation of liquefied natural gas by rail. Although rail industry officials have said LNG can be safely transported by rail, the petitioners claim the process is a threat to public safety and the environment.
APM Terminals will expand its container terminal at the Port of Mobile to accommodate regional growth. APM and the Alabama Port Authority have reached a deal to add 32 acres to the existing facility.
