New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell today announced a curfew for the city of New Orleans, from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m., effective immediately.
"It's a deterrent," the mayor said. "We want to be proactive in our approach."
"Now is not the time to return home," said New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson. "We still have debris remaining in our streets, and as night falls, there are no streetlights."
Chief Ferguson said it is totally unsafe to be out and about after nightfall.
"There's absolutely no reason for anyone to be on the streets of the city of New Orleans" under such circumstances, he said.
