Cantrell proclaims "Back That Azz Up" Day in New Orleans

Mayor LaToya Cantrell is taking over for the 9-9 and 2000, issuing a proclamation honoring a hit song that was released 25 years ago today.

Mayor Cantrell has proclaimed today, June 11, 2024, as “Back That Azz Up Day” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of that song and its music video being released. The song was recorded by Juvenile with featured appearances by Lil Wayne and the song’s producer, Mannie Fresh. All three artists are New Orleans natives. The video was recorded in New Orleans.

The track, released by Cash Money Records, was a massive hit in the summer of 1999. The song, also known as “Back That Thang Up” thanks to the radio edit of the single, peaked at number-19 on the Billboard Hot 100, at number-nine on the Billboard Rap Chart, and at number-five on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop survey. The Recording Industry Association of American certified “Back That Azz Up” as a gold record after more than 500,000 copies of the single were sold.

According to the proclamation issued by Mayor Cantrell, “Back That Azz Up” transcended its roots to become a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its infectious beat and memorable lyrics that continue to resonate with generations.” Cantrell’s proclamation also says “this legendary song has remarkably become the most played wedding song in America, uniting people across the nation in joy and celebration, and exemplifying the unifying power of music.”

In his own statement, Juvenile said he’s grateful for his fans and for the staying power “Back That Azz Up” has had.

“This song has been a huge part of my musical journey, and it's amazing to see it still resonate with people today, and I can’t wait for the moment each night of the tour when the song drops,” Juvenile said.
