Cops say after a couple reported a hit and run driver injured a little girl, evidence suggested otherwise.
"Sheriff Joseph Lopinto announces the arrest of 23-year-old Carlton Webb and his 34-year-old girlfriend Monica Wilson, both of Marrero, for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile," JPSO Sergeant Brandon Veal said in a news release.
He says that Webb is the child's biological father.
Veal reported that it started after the little girl suffered an injury.
"On August 30, 2026, deputies responded to an area hospital regarding a 3-year-old female who reportedly had been struck by an electric scooter in Marrero. According to the initial report made by both Webb and Wilson, an unknown male riding the scooter fled the scene after striking the juvenile."
The sergeant says doctors didn't buy the story and saw evidence of on-going abuse.
"During the investigation, detectives were informed that the juvenile displayed numerous superficial injuries that were in various stages of healing as well as intracranial bleeding. Detectives were able to determine that the initial hit-and-run claim was false."
JPSO says the investigation revealed that the physical abuse began in July 2025.
That's when they arrested Webb and Wilson.
Nearly a week later, the little girl is still receiving treatment.
"The juvenile remains hospitalized and is listed in stable condition."
