During a press availability session after cutting the ribbon opening the new Nix Library earlier Thursday, Mayor LaToya Cantrell took a question about travel expenses from a reporter. Her response is leaving many people stunned.
“All expenses incurred doing business on behalf of the city of New Orleans will not be reimbursed to the city of New Orleans,” Mayor Cantrell said. “One thing is clear; I do my job and I will continue to do it with distinction and integrity every step of the way.”
Cantrell says she was working on the behalf of the city and is not responsible for nearly $30,000 in expenses for her first class travel.
Cantrell effective said she will not repay for the upgrades on travel and ignored the City Council's recent rules on travel that it enacted.
The Mayor, as an elected official and not a hired employee, implied she is not affected by the same rules.
The same reporter questioned Cantrell's Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño about the stance on repaying the expenses. “I think that’s still under review with law kind of determining the variations between the CAO policy, the elected official policy, and the different variations,” CAO Montaño said. “There’s no ultimate conclusion at this current moment. Right now it’s in law, and we are evaluating it and I think there would be a determination sooner rather than later.”
This latest affront from the Mayor will no doubt provide more fodder for those who are working to recall her.
