We're 50 days away from the NoLaToya Campaign's deadline to pick up more than 53-thousand signatures from voter who want to remove Mayor LaToya Cantrell from office. Campaign leaders they will soon provide an idea as to where the campaign stands.
"We have a milestone coming out soon," recall vice chair Eileen Carter told WWL's Newell Normand. "I'm really excited about it."
Carter said that the overwhelming response to the campaign's mail-in effort forced them to delay their announcement. Now, she says, volunteers are organizing those petitions to get them to the Registrar of Voters Office.
"We are doing our due diligence, checking everything, dotting our "i"s, and crossing our "t"s to make sure this happens," Carter said.
Carter noted that some people who originally doubted the campaign effort's mission and/or its chance to succeed have changed their minds. She also says some voters who originally were on the fence about the recall have signed the petition.
"We've turned some of those hearts and minds, as well, and so we know once we continue to share this message, it's resonating in the community," Carter said. "They've been able to have those conversations with their family and friends and be real about it. They've driven around New Orleans and had their window busted or just sitting at home and watching the crime, you're like, this is enough."
The campaign's deadline to submit those signatures is February 22--Ash Wednesday.
