The Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission and the Causeway Police Department says someone is using their organizations to try and scam people.
"An unknown individual(s) has been utilizing phone numbers associated with the GNOEC and impersonating CPD officers and/or GNOEC employees in an attempt to extort money from citizens," according to a news release.
Authorities say they have been notified of several instances of attempted fraud.
"To date, we have been provided information that the perpetrator(s) have requested victims provide gift cards to resolve alleged citations and/or avoid arrests."
Officials stress that no one from the GNOEC nor the CPD will ever accept money in any form to address a citation or avoid an arrest.
"All traffic-related collection matters are handled by the respective court jurisdictions. Any communication which requests money, especially in the form of gift cards, to avoid arrest, should be considered fraudulent."
They ask that victims report any suspected fraudulent activity to local law enforcement.
It was not made clear how the scam artists are getting access to the phone numbers of victims.
