Congressman Cedric Richmond has a 9:45 am news conference scheduled where he’s expected to announce he’s accepted a position with the Biden administration. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat said serving as a member of Congress is quite a resume builder.
“But’s it’s nothing like having a top-level position in the White House, I mean your career, you’re talking about six figures plus for the rest of his life, having Washington experience and White House experience,” said Pinsonat.
Richmond was just re-elected to his sixth term in the second congressional district and served on Biden’s election campaign.
Pinsonat said when a Senator leaves office the Governor can appoint a temporary replacement until an election can be held, but when there is a vacancy in a congressional seat, it can only be filled by a special election. As for potential candidates…
“It’s going to be a wide-open field and you’re probably going to have 15 to 20 candidates talking about it. At least 8 to 9 actually run for the office because it’s a big deal,” said Pinsonat.
Pinsonat sees this as a win-win for the state, he said being a powerful congressman is one thing but a position in the White House has more pull when it comes to receiving federal funding.
“But believe me having a Louisianan sitting in the White House with the ear of the president, is certainly a big deal not only for Orleans but all of the taxpayers of Louisiana,” said Pinsonat.
