DOTD officials say the Chalmette Ferry is back in operation after a man drove his pick-up truck off the landing and into the Mississippi River over the weekend.
According to Coast Guard officials, the incident happened early Saturday morning.
Officials say witnesses saw the truck drive off the landing and into the river. They also reported seeing the driver swim to the shore. However, the driver has not been found. The Coast Guard suspended its search for the driver, but they will continue to work to recover the truck from the river.
On Sunday morning, DOTD officials posted on the Chalmette Ferry twitter page that the ferry "has begun normal service for the day," ending the closure after nearly 27 hours. The tweet notes that the craft shuttling vehicles and pedestrians from Chalmette to Algiers is "a small ferry."
