Safety at second line parades will be a topic at today's meeting of the New Orleans City Council's Criminal Justice Committee.

Local leaders were quick to warn against blaming second lines... after 13 people were shot, two fatally, during Sunday's Nine Times Social Aid & Pleasure Club second line.

"I want to state to the public that I don't want to generalize relative to second lines," said Councilmember Eugene Greene, who represents the district where the shootings happened. "Second lines are a very important part of our culture and they are mostly safe."

Greene points out that recent second lines in memory of soul singer Frankie Beverly and news anchor Eric Paulsen went off without incident.

Committee chairman Oliver Thomas says while this sort of thing has happened before, "what we usually know is that the people who perpetrate this type of violence, usually they have no relationship, no association with the culture or with the people involved in the club."

The committee meets this afternoon at 2:15 at New Orleans City Hall.
