With an upcoming election on the calendar, some Louisiana voters may need to take an extra step before heading to the polls.
The state uses a closed primary system for certain elections, meaning your party registration can determine whether you’re eligible to vote in a specific race.
Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says voters who are not affiliated with a political party should pay especially close attention.
“If you’re registered with no party, you need to check your status ahead of time and choose an affiliation if you plan to vote,” Pinsonat said. “Don’t wait until Election Day.”
With a Republican primary scheduled for May 15, voters who want to participate must be registered with that party before the deadline.
He warns that confusion around the rules could lead to lower turnout, particularly among voters who may not be keeping up with changes in election procedures.
“A lot of people are disconnected from these kinds of policy details,” he said. “That can result in fewer people showing up or being able to vote.”
One of the biggest concerns, Pinsonat says, is voters arriving at polling places without realizing they are not eligible to participate.
“You could show up ready to vote and be turned away if you haven’t declared a party,” he said.
To avoid that situation, voters are encouraged to verify or update their registration ahead of time through the Louisiana Secretary of State website.
As the election approaches, experts say being informed now can help ensure your voice is heard when it matters most.
