Police say a man is in custody after a police chase that ended with the suspect jumping into the Industrial Canal.
"The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the New Orleans Police Department, Louisiana State Police, U.S. Coast Guard and New Orleans Harbor Police, apprehended a suspect after he jumped into the Industrial Canal while fleeing from deputies," Sheriff James Pohlmann said in a news release.
Cops say 28-year-old Dandre Dales faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and flight from an officer. He also has an outstanding warrant from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for unauthorized use of a vehicle.
"The incident began around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, when deputies attempted to stop a grey Nissan Sentra near the intersection of St. Bernard Highway and Palmisano Boulevard in Chalmette, after confirming the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Orleans Parish."
The news release says deputies deployed spike strips, but Dales was able to make it to Orleans Parish and crashed on the St. Claude Avenue Bridge.
"He exited the vehicle, ran on foot, and jumped into the Industrial Canal."
Sheriff Pohlmann said this multi-agency response led to Dales being safely recovered from the water and taken into custody.
"During the course of the investigation, deputies also recovered a firearm which Dales had thrown from the vehicle."
